Volunteering in Africa for an Unforgettable Experience

In 2018, our association collaborated with the African organization in Zambia, "Twende Education for All." In August 2018 and in the summer of 2019, I visited the Twende Center at the pediatric cancer hospital and spent a few weeks volunteering with children who had advanced-stage cancer. Twende was founded by Andrea Mwalula, a primary school teacher with boundless energy, who selflessly dedicates her life to children. Born in Slovenia, she moved to Zambia, her father's birth country, with her family at the age of 13. Recognizing the importance of education and fueled by her love for children, she channels all her passion and energy into educating them. For over 20 years, she has taught in Cambodia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia. A few years ago, she established the non-profit organization "Twende Education for All - Learning Never Stops" within the pediatric cancer hospital in Lusaka, the only specialized pediatric hospital for cancer treatment in Southern Africa. Children from various Southern African countries come to this hospital, and some stay for years. Their mothers or grandmothers accompany them, often losing their jobs or daily earning opportunities. They sleep on the floor beside the children's beds. Every child eagerly awaits the opening of the Twende Center in the morning, where they can start learning and playing. The gloominess of the hospital rooms is replaced by vibrancy and joy, allowing them to momentarily forget their pain and fear. For some children, this is their first encounter with education, as they come from impoverished and remote villages where schooling opportunities are scarce. Doctors have observed that children who happily engage in learning, creating, and playing show progress in their recovery. Recognizing this positive impact, the Twende Center was offered additional space in the hemophilia department. The total number of children now exceeds 100. Currently, three teachers are employed, funded by Andrea's own resources and donations. However, due to the expansion into a new hemophilia ward, the organization urgently requires assistance as the number of children continues to grow. Furthermore, the question arose of how to support the mothers who sometimes remain in the hospital for years without money, going hungry, and wearing the same clothes. This led to the idea of providing education for the mothers, which has been realized through various workshops for acquiring new skills that can be practiced in the hospital while still caring for their children.

My teenage dream of volunteering in Africa came true, but many years later. However, it proved to be an incredible learning experience. I was truly amazed by how children, despite their illness, managed to maintain radiant smiles on their faces.

In the blink of an eye, material things have lost their once-unquestioned importance. Africa, with its mesmerizing blend of natural wonders, majestic creatures, empowered women, and warm smiles, possesses an irresistible allure that effortlessly captures the hearts of those who experience it. Its stunning landscapes, vibrant wildlife, resilient women, and infectious expressions create an indelible tapestry that weaves its way under your skin.
